When I first started playing duplicate one of the top local
players interrupted a legalistic argument (of the type you cited
above) with a comment that's served me well over the years.

"If you know something that I don't, tell me" (Yeah, flesh it
out with "from the auction, not your hand", etc. -- I got the gist
and so will anybody not trying to play rules lawyer)
