That information was not given in the original post, save by  
inference from "he thought diamonds were trumps" (how did Herman know  
that?)

The only way to know declarer's intention is to ask him.

Edgar Kaplan is reported to have said "decide what ruling you wish to  
make, then find a law to support it". To me, that's a stupid way to  
rule a game. But perhaps we're stuck with it, at least for now. If  
you pick Law 46B4, then no card was played. If you pick Law 45C4(a),  
then dummy's lowest diamond was played. Take your pick.
