Both Law 24 and Law 49 use the phrase:" ... card or cards are in a position
...", how they got into this position is immaterial.

So whether the card(s) became visible from being accidentally dropped, from
being boxed in the board or simply by being played does not matter except
for how the situation is subsequently handled.

If the French word "placée" indicates an action then it is an incorrect
translation; if it (as I would believe) simply indicates a state it is
perfectly OK.
