coincidentally - for partner's benefit (so that partner will not
misinterpret your forthcoming overcall).

Richard can't help contradicting me even when he knows he is in the
wrong :(
In the original case, you do *not* know what opponents methods are.
Their card said 1C may show a doubleton.
The alert-failure contradicted that meaning.
In such cases, in the UK, you are enjoined to "protect yourself".
I don't like that rule, either :( But it is the rule. So I comply :)
