The correct procedure is for you and your partner, independently of each
other, to ascertain for each of your own satisfaction which defense to
apply.
You can do so from already knowing or from asking your opponents, but
strictly speaking you may not do so from your partner asking or not asking.
(It is improper by you two to cooperate in any way during the auction for
this purpose.)
However, as when playing without screens you should expect the answer to
your possible question to be identical to the answer you heard been given to
your partner asking the same question, the information from this answer is
fully authorized also to you.
