+=+ Very kind thought, Bob. You would appreciate that, in
Shanghai for example, the heat of the kitchen was less in the
discussions of the drafting committee from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
(with break for a snack) - though that wasn hectic enough -
than in the subsequent execution of the committee's decisions
in two-way communication with Anna Gudge and Richard Hills.
There were a number of days on which I did an hours work on
this before joining Kojak for breakfast at 6.30 a.m. after which
I returned to the computer. Kojak helped a lot in the reading of
Anna's products before they were set. Anna, as ever, was Anna.
As for the results, the drafting subcommittee has corporate
responsibility for what has been done. The WBFLC discussed
certain Laws and offered opinion, while the Executive Council
determined the name of the game, but the core responsibility
for the product rests with the Laws Drafting Committee, and
in my case easily so. (Nigel is correct in his belief that I support
the not-everywhere-popular view that entities presenting
tournaments should have total control of what systems methods
should be allowed in them.) We received opinion on our earlier
draft from some seventeen sources - NBOs and Zones plus the
Portland Club - and any individual players wishing to express
opinions were guided (here on blml, for example) to send them
to their NBOs. Bear in mind that the members of the WBF are
the NBOs.
According to my count, during our meetings in Shanghai
we made 88 changes or adjustments in the wording of the drafts,
We rewrote Laws 13/14, 27, 40B2(b) and (c), 69 (including
separating out again Law 71), we detached 87 from 79 where
it had been placed, agreed the Preface and the Introduction,
and we had an extended discussion of the Definitions for the
first time. We kept Richard busy updating the Index.
                                       ~ Grattan ~ +=+
