The original SAYC, developed by a special committee of the ACBL,  
incorporated (someone may have woken up and changed it since) this  
travesty:  1NT-P-2S *required* opener to bid 3C, which opener either  
passed or corrected to 3D, to play.  In tournament events which were  
restricted to SAYC only, the auction 1NT-P-2S-P-2NT was illegal and  
carried an automatic penalty.  And, yes, they did call it "bridge".
